Humanscale Liberty Chair

The Humanscale Liberty Chair is priced between $500 and $1000 dollars. Its claim to fame is that it only has two manual adjustments – one for seat height and one for seat depth. The chair was designed by Neils Diffrient who has been called the “granddaddy of the ergonomic revolution.”

In contrast to traditional stretch mesh used on chair backs, the Liberty features a different kind of mesh upholstery. Mesh has a reputation for lacking support and being abrasive, so the manufacturers have attempted to alleviate these problems with three panels that displace pressure instead of giving under body weight. In contrast, the seat pad is made of a sculpted foam material.

Humanscale boasts that the Liberty will accommodate up to 95% of the population, whether you’re 5’4” or 6’4”, 100 pounds or 250 pounds.

The Liberty offers several standard features. The self-adjusting recline offers a counter-balance mechanism that supports through the full range of motion. There are no springs or locks to adjust. The backrest pivots to allow for automatic adjustments as you recline and to maintain lumbar support. The form-sensing, non-stretch mesh provides a customized fit and lumbar support that is self-adjusting – there are no extra levers or knobs to set. The contoured seat cushion is sculpted to increase the contact area and reduce pressure points on the body.

You can select from several options to customize the look and fit of the Liberty chair. These options are not standard, but are available for an extra charge. Choose from fixed armrests, height-adjustable armrests, or no armrests at all. A gel seat cushion can purchased for added comfort especially during long-term use. Arm pads are also available made of the same Technogel® material. For large and petite users respectively, you can order high and low range cylinders. A jury cylinder, which returns the chair to a forward facing position, and foot ring are also available.

Freedom chairs can be purchased in a variety of colors and in five different frame color combinations.
